“Shlomo Sand has written a remarkable book”—Tony Judt
“One of the most fascinating and challenging books published here in a long time”—Tom Segev
A historical tour de force that demolishes the myths and taboos that have surrounded Jewish and Israeli history, The Invention of the Jewish People offers a new account of both that demands to be read and reckoned with. Was there really a forced exile in the first century, at the hands of the Romans? Should we regard the Jewish people, throughout two millennia, as both a distinct ethnic group and a putative nation – returned at last to its Biblical homeland?
Shlomo Sand argues that most Jews actually descend from converts, whose native lands were scattered far across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The formation of a Jewish people and then a Jewish nation out of these disparate groups could only take place under the sway of a new historiography, developing in response to the rise of nationalism throughout Europe. Beneath the biblical backfill of the nineteenth-century historians, and the twentieth-century intellectuals who replaced rabbis as the architects of Jewish identity,The Invention of the Jewish People uncovers a new narrative of Israel’s formation, and proposes a bold analysis of nationalism that accounts for the old myths.
After a long stay on Israel’s bestseller list, and winning the coveted Aujourd’hui Award in France, The Invention of the Jewish People is finally available in English. The central importance of the conflict in the Middle East ensures that Sand’s arguments will reverberate well beyond the historians and politicians that he takes to task. Without an adequate understanding of Israel’s past, capable of superseding today’s opposing views, diplomatic solutions are likely to remain elusive. In this iconoclastic work of history, Shlomo Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel’s future.
Shlomo Sand studied history at the University of Tel Aviv and at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, in Paris. He currently teaches contemporary history at the University of Tel Aviv. His other books include L’Illusion du politique: Georges Sorel et le débat intellectuel 1900, Georges Sorel en son temps, Le XXe siècle à l’écran and Les Mots et la terre: les intellectuels en Israël.

I read the French version of this book when it was available in Europe under the name “Comment le peuple Juif fut inventé” and DO very much recommend this English translation.
Yakov M. Rabkin’s “A threat From Within” is also recommended as a companion work.
In my opinion these two books are indispensable reading to any serious student or scholar on the influences of Jewish and Zionist history on current events in the Middle East.
May Peace be Upon you and your angels
I am impressed by what I have read in respect of your position and research.
You are a very courageous man and I guess you firmly believe in what you say based upon research and not making unjustified claims.
I believe you perspective has the possibility of establishing sustainable peace not only in Israel but in the world amongst all mankind.
The essence of what you are proclaiming has touches upon the tenets of core religious scriptures.
Despite true power residing in the hands of the few, the journey to change hearts and minds starts with a single step. To establish critical mass, takes amongst other attributes, determination, will, wisdom and compassion.
I for one have no issues in supporting your effort in any way I can as your heart and effort is true. May God bless you with a long life and success in your effort and may he bless you with resources to establish peace and harmony in the world.
We are all interconnected physically and metaphysically. Together we have the force to establish utopia and equilibrium with nature. But re-calibrating requires a cataclysmic event to unite us in a common objective. This is only a function of time and will happen. The cycle has to complete its objective.
Individuals like yourself are few and far between to make an impact but I guess your inner being is restless to make a difference.
I pray for your success…it is what I have faith in …the power of prayer and action. I would be more than proud to support you in your aim.
May Peace be Upon you and your angels

lol a number of the observations folks submit are silly and unrelated, many times i wonder whether they realistically read the article content and content before leaving your 2 cents or whether or not they simply skim the titles and come up with the first thought that drifts into their minds. regardless, it really is useful to read smart commentary once in a while in contrast to the same exact, outdated post vomit that i constantly notice on the internet i’m off to enjoy a few rounds of facebook poker goodbye
